And when she later learns Rhaenyra didn’t sleep with Daemon (Matt Smith), but with Ser Criston, Alicent seems devastated. The smallfolk eventually turned on Rhaenyra after Helaena Targaryen’s (Phia Saban) suicide, which sparked rumors that Rhaenyra had ordered her execution. Riots destroyed the Dragonpit and prompted Rhaenyra to flee the capital, abandoning her throne.
While its light was dim, the power of diplomacy still flickered. That light went out for good the moment Vhagar’s mouth enveloped the Queen’s son. However, this is revealed to be a lie (or at least a misconception) in House of the Dragon. While such lines are full of fire and blood, fury and badassery, it should be noted that Fire & Blood is written by a male maester whose disposition is to naturally sympathize with the Greens. He and many view Rhaenyra as the usurper for defending what was hers by rights, and these lines would seem to suggest a recklessness that plunged the Seven Kingdoms into war. But the truth of it, at least in the show’s canon, is that she was the hesitant one.
By injecting Martin’s record of Targaryen ancestry with a deeper humanity — relationships, disputes, untold secrets — the showrunners have created interesting characters out of one-dimensional historical figures. However, the canonical succession struggle and these new interpersonal dynamics don’t always mesh. And time and time again, it’s Alicent who bears the brunt of such imperfect changes. In the context of a larger fight over who will rule Westeros, Alicent cutting off a childhood friend because she slept with someone seems petty and vindictive, and the narrative doesn’t make space to explore this further. In episode 4, Rhaenyra and Alicent nearly make amends, telling each other how they’ve missed one another, but it’s just a blip (one of many).

Like the men in her life, the writers seem to use Alicent as they see fit to move the plot forward. She’s a powerful, scheming queen one moment and an ignorant pawn the next. Although she rules King's Landing for six months, Rhaenyra is not a beloved queen. The people initially cheer for her when she takes the throne from her brother, but when Rhaenyra hikes taxes dramatically to fund the war, it is the people of King's Landing who pay the price.
Indeed, Alicent and her children take great pleasure in teasing Rhaenyra and the boys over their ‘strong’ looks. A sort of cold war begins between the Queen and the Princess, with each trying to build a power base in King’s Landing. Alicent ultimately wins after Larys Strong has his father, Lyonel, and brother, Harwin, murdered.
"Rhaenyra's the only one who's demonstrated restraint," she says. "When dragons flew to war, everything burned. I do not wish to rule over a kingdom of ash and bone," Rhaenyra says to her husband, during a strained standoff at the Black Council. Their disagreement grows violent when the two speak in private and Daemon clutches his queen's neck. Rhaenyra Targaryen’s ascent across the first season (and her final descent into despair during Sunday night’s finale) has been one of tragedy and betrayal.
I suspect that the strategy set-up will take up much of this second season, but unlike with the book, Rhaenyra might even leave Dragonstone to participate. And we will literally see fire rain down from the sky when the two sides have to force allegiance from reluctant settlements. Later, Corlys and Princess Rhaenys (Eve Best) find a body in the fireplace that's been burnt beyond recognition. Earlier in the episode, we saw dissension between Corlys and Rhaenys. While Rhaenys has given up on her dreams of the throne, he still desires that power, despite knowing as well as his wife that Rhaenyra's children did not come from Laenor. "It remembers names." With Laenor dead, the threat of his name's longevity has been thrown even more into question.
The finale shows that not only is war coming, but the cracks are showing in the marriage of Rhaenyra and her most important ally. Rhaenyra agrees to at least consider the Hightower offer that she swear fealty to Aegon for serious concessions, which would stop any war. During a tense meeting with rival Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) on the causeway of Dragonstone, Rhaenyra flies in with a power entrance on her dragon Syrax. While Daemon wants to battle right there on the causeway, she stops him. House of the Dragon season 2 will begin filming in early 2023. House of the Dragon ends its first season with heartache… and a promise.
